Buyer guide · Choosing a Pixel

The best phone for GrapheneOS depends on how long you will keep it.

Buy a current Pixel, new, and match the size and budget to your use. GrapheneOS features are largely the same across current Pixels; what differs is the years of support left, screen size, RAM, price and, between older and newer chips, some hardware-dependent protections. This guide gives a pick for each kind of buyer.

Short answer

Most people should buy a Pixel 10 or 10 Pro. Choose the Pixel 10a if you want the longest support window and the lowest price in the Pixel 10 series (subject to current store pricing), the Pro XL if you want the biggest non-folding screen and battery, and a Fold only if you will use the inner display. GrapheneOS features are the same across the Pixel 10 family.

What to weigh, in order

  1. Minimum OEM support date. This is the lifespan of the phone as a trusted device. Each extra year of updates is worth more than extra storage you may never fill.
  2. Size. A 6.3″ phone suits one-handed use; a 6.8″ phone suits long reading and bigger batteries.
  3. RAM and multitasking. Running several isolated profiles, a sandboxed Google Play and a VPN is lighter on a Pro with 16GB than on a base model.
  4. Price against the years left. Divide the price by the remaining years to see the real cost per year.

Camera and display upgrades matter less for privacy than support years. Chip generation does matter: some protections depend on hardware. For example, Pixel 8 and later have hardware memory tagging (MTE), which GrapheneOS uses to harden against memory-corruption bugs and which older supported Pixels lack. Do not assume every supported Pixel gets identical protection.

Buy new, not used

A new and a used example of the same model, bought today, have the same remaining support. The saving on a used phone is real, but you inherit an unknown history: unlock state, previous accounts, possible tampering. Buying new stock reduces that previous-owner uncertainty, though you should still verify the installation and check for tampering on arrival. Also confirm any used or carrier-variant Pixel allows OEM unlocking before you buy, since a carrier-locked bootloader cannot be installed on (unlocking the SIM does not help). We install GrapheneOS, relock verified boot and test the hardware before dispatch, then back it with a 12-month warranty. If you would rather install it yourself, compare the options in prepared vs DIY flashing.

Phones that are not an option

GrapheneOS does not run on Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola or iPhone hardware. If you currently use one of them, the answer is to move to a Pixel; see GrapheneOS vs Samsung and GrapheneOS vs iPhone for what you gain and give up.

Best phone for GrapheneOS — FAQ

What is the best phone for GrapheneOS?

A current Pixel bought new. For most people the Pixel 10 or 10 Pro is the best balance of size, price and update years (minimum OEM support through Aug 2032). The Pixel 10a has the longest window (through Mar 2033) and is the lowest-priced Pixel 10-series model, subject to current store pricing.

Is the Pixel 10 Pro better for GrapheneOS than the Pixel 10?

GrapheneOS features are the same on both. The Pro adds 16GB RAM and more premium hardware, which helps if you run many profiles and apps at once. For simple use, the base Pixel 10 is enough.

Is a cheaper older Pixel a good idea?

It can be, if the update end date still suits how long you plan to keep it. A Pixel 9a has minimum OEM support through Apr 2032. Avoid models close to their end date, because you will have to replace them sooner, and remember that Pixel 8 and later have hardware protections such as memory tagging that older models lack.

Can I use a Pixel I already own?

Yes, if it is a supported model and the bootloader can be unlocked. Carrier-locked or carrier-variant units may not allow OEM unlocking, so check before buying. We also offer a bespoke service for customer-supplied hardware. Check the end date for your model first.

Do you ship the phones worldwide?

Yes, by tracked and insured international express, except where Australian sanctions prevent export. See the shipping policy for current rates.
