Battery life on GrapheneOS is generally comparable to stock Android — and in many cases better, because GrapheneOS runs fewer background services and telemetry processes by default. Performance remains strong on modern Pixel hardware, even with security hardening active. This guide covers how to monitor battery usage, optimise where it matters, and avoid common mistakes that drain power unnecessarily.
Why it matters
Battery drain is one of the most common concerns people raise after switching to a new operating system. The reality is that most battery issues trace back to specific apps, settings, or environmental factors — not to GrapheneOS itself. Understanding what actually consumes power lets you make informed decisions rather than guessing. A well-configured device gives you reliable uptime without sacrificing security or functionality.
What actually drains your battery
Before adjusting anything, understand the primary causes of battery drain on any smartphone:
- Display brightness. The screen is almost always the single largest power consumer. Higher brightness means faster drain.

Step-by-step battery optimisation
Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the previous.
- Check your battery usage data. Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. Review which apps and system services consumed the most power over the last 24 hours. This is your baseline — do not skip it.
- Identify your top drains. Look for anything unexpected. A flashlight app consuming 8% of your battery is a red flag. A navigation app using significant power after a long drive is normal. Context matters.
- Restrict unnecessary background apps. For apps that do not need to run in the background, go to Settings > Apps > [app name] > Battery and set them to "Restricted." This prevents background activity when you are not actively using the app.
- Reduce screen brightness and timeout. Lower your display brightness or enable adaptive brightness. Set your screen timeout to 30 seconds or 1 minute. These two changes alone can extend battery life noticeably.
- Disable location for apps that do not need it. Go to Settings > Location > App location permissions. Review each app. A weather app may need approximate location. A calculator does not need any. Set permissions to "Don't allow" or "Ask every time" where appropriate.
- Use Wi-Fi over mobile data when possible. Wi-Fi consumes less power than cellular data. When you have access to a trusted network, connecting to it reduces the load on your cellular radio.
Sandboxed Google Play and battery
If you have installed sandboxed Google Play services, there is one specific setting worth adjusting. Google Play services often needs to maintain a persistent connection for push notifications. Without a battery exception, Android's optimisation may interrupt this connection, causing delayed or missed notifications.
To configure this, go to Settings > Apps > Google Play services > Battery and set it to "Unrestricted."
However — and this is important — do not set every app to Unrestricted. That defeats the purpose of battery optimisation entirely. Reserve the Unrestricted setting for Google Play services and any specific app where you have confirmed that restricted mode causes a functional problem. Be selective.
What to expect after initial setup
If your battery drains faster than expected in the first day or two after setting up a new device or restoring apps, this is normal. Background processes are settling — apps are syncing data, indexing content, and completing initial setup tasks. Give the device 24 to 48 hours of regular use before drawing conclusions about battery life.
Auto-reboot, which GrapheneOS uses to apply updates and maintain security, does not harm battery life. The reboot itself takes a small amount of power, but the device returns to normal operation immediately.

- Check battery usage stats before changing any settings. Let data guide your decisions, not assumptions.

- If using a VPN, expect slightly higher battery usage. Encryption processing and maintaining a persistent connection require additional power. This is normal and expected.
Common mistakes
- Blaming GrapheneOS for battery drain caused by apps. The operating system provides the tools to identify the actual cause. Check battery usage stats before assuming a system-level problem.
- Setting all apps to Unrestricted. This removes battery optimisation for those apps entirely, allowing unrestricted background activity. Only grant this exception where there is a confirmed, specific need.
- Keeping GPS on constantly. High-accuracy location is power-intensive. Disable it when not actively needed, or limit it to specific apps.
- Not checking actual battery usage statistics. Guessing wastes time. The data is right there in Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Installing excessive apps and granting broad background permissions. Every app with background access is a potential drain. Install what you need. Remove what you do not.
Reality check
No smartphone has unlimited battery life. Environmental factors — ambient temperature, cellular signal strength, screen-on time — all affect how long a charge lasts. GrapheneOS does not add meaningful overhead to these fundamentals.
